Comments: After leaving the marble halls of Ogden High and serving a mission in
Deutschland, I married my high school sweetheart, Ruth Ann Smith (Class of '66). I attended Weber State
University on athletic, music and academic scholarships, then graduated from the University of Utah in English
Literature (Beverly Hansen would be proud of me). Following graduation Ruth Ann, also a college grad,
supported me through law school. My eclectic legal career has seen my negotiating labor contracts for the
Department of the Air Force, prosecuting rapists, robbers and murderers, acting as an appointed city attorney,
serving as general counsel and vice president for a regional savings bank, and serving on the panel of Chapter
7 bankruptcy trustees for the State of Utah, an appointment originating out of the Justice Department in
D.C. To break the monotony, I ran for and was elected to several successive terms in the Utah Sate
Legislature, serving as both a state representative and a state senator. While serving as a Bishop and on
two high councils, we raised 5 children and are currently spoiling 9 grandchildren. We have lived in the
Ogden/Salt Lake area all of our lives, spending the last 30 years in North Ogden. I have returned to
Ogden High on a number of occasions to teach students about law and politics and find each visit a
gateway to images of bygone days filled with pleasant memories and associations.
